Stop Telemarketing Calls Commercial Available Anti-telemarketing Solutions

					There are several commercial solutions available to block and stop telemarketing calls. Some are devices which attach to your phone line. One is an option from your phone service provider, and some are “do-not-call” lists maintained by state or other organizations. This section summarizes the currently available solutions, and does not imply an endorsement by CAE. It is presented solely for the information of the reader.

					TeleZapper This is a device which sends the SIT tone signal every time your phone goes "off-hook". The original model (TZ800) sends only the first of the 3 tone series. The updated model (TZ900) allows you to set it to send either the first tone or all 3 tones. This device will work with answering machines since when the machine answers the line goes "off-hook". This device is effective when it encounters telemarketing dialers which are programmed to recognize the SIT tones signal. If the dialer is programmed not to recognize the tones, or if it was a manually dialed call, the TeleZapper will do nothing. When used in conjunction with an answering machine you should offset your greeting to have 1.5 to 2 seconds of silence so that the SIT tones can play without interference. This will not work with teleco voice messaging systems because your line never goes "off-hook" when answered by the telephone company system. Call Screener This device from CallMeNot has normal and passive operation modes. In normal mode the device will answer a call, play the 3 tone SIT tones, then it delivers a spoken message to telemarketers instructing them to remove your number from their call list. In this mode your phone will not ring because the call is intercepted by the device. Legitimate callers are instructed to press 1 to ring through. The device then rings, not your telephone. In passive mode the call rings your phone and you are required to answer. If you determine the caller to be a telemarketer you press the star button (*) to activate the device. This will not work with voice messaging systems because your line never goes "off-hook" when answered by the telephone company system. The Phone Butler This is a manually activated device. You must answer the call and determine if the caller is a telemarketer. If so, you press the star button (*) to activate the device which send a spoken message instructing the telemarketer to remove your number from their call list. The voice of the message has a British accent. This will not work with voice messaging systems because your phone line never goes "off-hook" when answered by the telephone company system. Telephone Company No Solicitation Service This is a service placed on your line by your telephone service provider. It intercepts all calls and plays a message to telemarketers telling them to remove your number from their solicitation list. Legitimate callers are instructed to press a button to ring through. Your options with this service will vary, depending on your provider. There is a monthly charge, usually about $6.95, plus the initial installation charge. State Maintained Do-Not-Call Lists A dozen or so states have passed legislation providing for do-not-call lists to which you can request to have your number added. Some states provide on-line sign up web sites. There is usually a charge for this and you must renew from time to time. There is a charge for this and your listing will need to be renewed from time to time.
